What you should do in a state of anxiety- 6 Easy Tips to handle anxiety

How do you handle anxiety?

No one is free from anxiety, tension, and stress as these feelings are inevitable in our everyday lives.

The feeling of killing it in that job interview, the fear of losing your job, a loved one or being caught lying or cheating.

It could also be that you are worried about your financial challenges and your inability to settle the bills that are piling up, especially in this COVID-19 era. These are some of the causes of anxiety.

But there are ways you can manage your anxiety state and prevent it from affecting your normal daily function, behaviour, and life.

Here are Six (6) things you can do to handle anxiety

Do relaxation exercises

If you think watching TV, smoking, taking alcohol and drugs will help you to relax, then you are only looking for a temporary way out. The worries will come back.

One of the activities you should be doing is to engage in relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga or other mind relaxation exercises.

When you are tensed, you breathe faster, your heart rate increases, and you may experience the feeling of breathlessness and wanting to pass out.

Regularly taking deep breaths from your diaphragm helps to relax a nerve connected to the brain that sends a message to the entire body to loosen up.

Eat and Sleep well

For your mind and body to be able to fight the daily struggles of life you need to sleep moderately within the recommended eight (8) hours of sleep per day.

Eat foods rich in nutrients, like grains, fruits, proteins, and vegetables. Avoid foods and drinks with high calories, caffeine, and excess sugar as they can help contribute to your stress level.

Identify your stressors

One of the ways you can deal with your anxiety is to identify its cause and devise a means of solving your problems. Identify the stressors of your anxiety and jot them down. Next to each stressor, write out a solution or more.

Get in touch with your loved ones

“A problem shared is half-solved.”

There is nothing like getting support from those you trust (friends, family, or support-group) as no man is an island. If you can’t seem to get yourself together, talking to someone about how you feel can help you to manage stress. You could even get some help or solutions to your worries from them.

Engage in activities you enjoy

Another tip to handle anxiety is to participate in activities you love like strolling, listening to songs, playing games. And any other interesting stuff that can takes your mind off your worries. Find activities that make you happy and engage in them whenever you experience anxiety.

Be Optimistic

A great distraction off your thoughts, worry, and anxiety is to focus on positive things. Never forget the little achievements and blessings that have come your way. Wish, dream, and think of the best things that could happen to you in the future.

The bottom line is that you are likely to experience situations that may make you tensed, stressed and put you in a state of anxiety. It is normal.

However, if you can’t seem to control or manage your worries and anxiety, you may have an anxiety disorder. You should seek professional or medical help for proper care.
